• Keep the faith and spread it as well.
• Jesus says go into all the world and spread the gospel.
• As Christians, we want to spread the faith by sharing God's Word.
• Evangelism matters because it spreads the word.
• Read Luke 15   Lost sheep, coin and the prodical son
• Jesus came to seek and save.
• Overwhelming praise comes from being 'found.'
• Our lives are most precious to Jesus.
• Jesus said that he as come that we may have live and have it more abundantly.

To understand prayer we must first understand the Will Of God!

References of the Will of God:

• Jeremiah 29:11 "For I know the plans I have for you, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future."
• 1 Thessalonians 4:3 It is God's will that you should be sanctified: that you should avoid sexual immorality.
• James 1:5 If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.
• Proverbs 3:5-6 Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and He will direct your path.
• Ephesians 5:15-20 Be very careful, then, how you live-not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil. Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord's will is. Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit, speaking to one another with psalms, hymns, and songs from eh Spirit. Sing and make music from your heart to the Lord, always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

• Micah 6:8 He has shown you, O mortal, what is good.  And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.
• Hebrews 10:36 You need to persevere so that when you have done the will of God, you will receive what He has promised.

Prayer is a intimate connection with God.
We, as Christians sometimes tend to sink into turmoil, rejoice in our woos, live in confusion, have doubt about nearly everything, anger to easily, get frustrated by the tiniest thing, linger in heartache, stress over day to day living, etc.
There is always an answer in prayer.
We should always praise God when we pray.

Examples:

•  Nehemiah 9:5-6 You alone are God; 
• Psalm 31:7-8 You have set me in a safe place;
• 1 Kings 8: 23 You keep your promises with unfailing love;
•  Jeremiah 32:18-19 Nothing is too hard for you;
• Revelation 15:3-4 You are great, marvelous, just and true!;
•  Revelation 4:8 Holy, holy, holy is the Lord;
•  2 Corinthians 1:3 You are the source of all comfort.

Psalm 37:1-4  v1 Fret not yourself because of evildoers, neither be envious against those who work unrighteousness. v2 For they shall soon be cut down like the grass, and wither as the green herb. v3 Trust in the Lord and do good; so shall you dwell in the land and feed surely on His faithfulness, and truly you shall be fed. v4 Delight yourself also in the Lord, and He will give you the desires and secret petitions of your heart.

• Why do the wicked seem to prosper?
• We as Christians need fret not!!
• Be conscience of our walk with the Lord.
• Be pleasing to God.
• We walk by faith not by sight.
• Do good.
• And we know that all things work together for good to those who love  God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.  Romans 8:28
• Trust in the Lord with all your heart; and lean not unto your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your path.  Proverbs 3:5
• For My thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways My ways.  Isaish 55:8
• The just shall live by faith.  Romans 1:17
• Position yourself to be blessed by God.

The Salutation/Occasion

Welcome is a word of kind greeting, as to one whose arrival gives warm pleasure and happiness.
That is what the Brown Chapel Family feels for you all on this 60th Homecoming celebration.
So, Brown Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church Family would like to welcome you all with open arms and warm pleasure and happiness!

The Occasion - On this Homecoming occasion which reminds us that we are all on a journey to that great homegoing, I'd like to take is time to reflect on how God's plan for us has also provided, if we allow it, His glorious protection, as we walk this daily journey.
As our spiritual conflicts with Satan continues, our weapon are mighty and numerous!
For instance, we have the Whole Armor of God which allows us to stand against the wiles of the devil.
From Ephesians 6:10-18, each morning we should praise God in all things and be strong in His might power. Then clothe ourselves with the Belt of truth, put on a Breastplate of righteousness, followed by the Gospel of peace fitted firmly on your feet, hold up the Shield of faith, place the Helmet of salvation atop the heads and arm ourselves with the Sword of the Spirit which is the Word of God. And finally, pray in the Spirit on all occasions.
Now we are prepared to face another day. But as we go through the rituals of daily life, Satan will attempt to derail us in sneaky ways, such as watching the daily news, that could raise one's blood pressure or listening to gossip. You get the picture. But God had provided another weapon against this tactic. God said in Philippians 4:8, Brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely and whatever is praiseworthy, think on these things.
There are many other tools that I could mention but I leave you with this thought from 1 Corinthian 15:57, Thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ!!

• When we believe, it is of the supernatural
• Our faith in Jesus heals us.

Acts 10

• The ground was leveled at the foot of the cross. There is no platform of religion or ethnic heritage or practice that one must climb to qualify for God's saving grace.
• Only God is to be worshiped. Not Peter by Cornelius.
• Anyone who comes to God must believe that He exists and that He rewards those who earnestly seek Him. Hebrews 11:6
• Jesus Christ is Lord of all people.
• God chose those who would see the risen Lord, says Peter, thus indicating that their witness not only has God's approval but has its origin in divine initiative, not human motivation.

Acts 11

• Peter speaks of repentance to the Gentiles.
• Salvation blessings comes to those who hear, receive, believe and hold fast to the Word. The gospel message.

Sermon
Luke 18:1-8 - v1 He then told them a parable on the need for them to pray always and not become discouraged: v2 "There was a judge in a certain town who didn't fear God or respect man. v3 And a widow in that town kept coming to him, saying, 'Give me justice against my adversary.' v4 "For a while he was unwilling, but later he said to himself, 'Even though I don't fear God or respect man, v5 yet because this widow keeps pestering me, I will give her justice, so she doesn't wear me out by her persistent coming.'" v6 Then the Lord said, "Listen to what the unjust judge says. v7 Will not God grant justice to His elect who cry out to Him day and night? Will He delay help them? v8 I tell you that He will swiftly grant them justice. Nevertheless, when the Son of Man comes, will He find that faith on earth?"

• Have you ever felt like giving up? 
• We need to continue to press towards the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus. Philippians 3:14
• See that none render evil for evil unto anyone; but ever follow that which is good, both among yourselves and to all men. 1 Thessalonians 5:17
• We must pray and be on one accord..
• Pray without ceasing.
• Never lose heart.
• Wait on the Lord.

Acts 3:1-26

• The Lame Man Healed - Peter and John are about to enter into the temple by the gate named "Beautiful" for the hour of prayer, the ninth hour. A crippled beggar is there asking alms (money, clothing, food).
• Peter fixes his eyes on the beggar along with John and says, "Look at us." 
• Peter wants the beggar' full attention, and when he has it, Peter says, "Silver and gold I do not have, but what I do have I give you: In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, rise up and walk."
• Then Peter took the beggar by his right hand and lifted him up and immediately the beggar' feet and ankle bones were strengthened. 
• The beggar leaped up, stood and walked. He entered the temple with Peter and John, walking , leaping and praising God.
• All the people saw him waling and praising God. They remembered that he was the beggar who had sat at the Beautiful gate begging alms. The people were filled with amazement.
• Peter was led by the Holy Spirit.
• All the people ran toward Peter, John and the beggar who were on the porch which is called Solomon's. When Peter saw that, he spoke to the crowd, "Men of Israel, why do you marvel at this? Or why look so intently at us, as though by our power or godiness we have made this man walk?"
• Peter preaches Jesus to the crowd. Again, the Holy Spirit is leading him.
• Peter calls to the crowd to repent.

Sermon
John 13:12-17 - v12 So after he had washed their feet, and had taken his garments, and was set down again, he said unto them, "Know ye what I have done to you? v13 Ye call me Master and Lord: and ye say well; for so I am. v14 If I then, your Lord and Master, have washed your feet; ye also ought to wash one another's feet. v15 For I have given you an example, that ye should do as I have done to you."

Topic: "How To Be Happy in the New Year"

Humility is the example of washing the feet of the disciples.

Happy In Jesus
Believe - that God is!

• Faith in God and His power
• God has all power and He has rest for the weary.
• Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous! Do not be terrified or dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go."  Joshua 1:9
• God Our Protector - Whoever goes to the Lord for safety, whoever remains under the protection of the Almighty, can say to Him, "You are my defender."  Psalm 91
• And my God will supply all you needs according to His riches in glory in Christ Jesus.  Philippians 4:19

Beware - be careful, be forewarned

• Because of sin we must to ever watchful and discerning.
• Ask for spiritual guidance from the Holy Spirit
• Be careful of boasting
• Be sober, be vigilant, because your adversary the devil walks about as a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour.  1 Peter 5:8

Behave - live a godly life.

• Thus let your light shine before men, so that they may see your good works and they should glorify your Father in the heavens.  Matthew 5:16
• But be doers of the word and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.  James 1:22
• Weeping may tarry for the night, but joy comes with the morning. Psalm 30:5

Revelation 15-17

• Revelation 15 begins the preparation for the last seven bowls. God's wrath began with the seven seals and will be finished with the last seven bowls.
• As we've studied, God has poured out His wrath in judgment on early sinners. Adam's sin in the Garden of Eden; Noah's family was spared when God sent the flood that destroyed the whole world; Sodom and Gomorrah was destroyed by God with fire and brimstone. 
• 
  
• Revelation 16 describes the final seven bowls of the wrath of God which represents the climax of God's punishment of sinners during the Tribulation time.
• An angel says, "Thou art righteous, O Lord, which art, and wast, and shalt be, because thou hast judged thus."
• As terrible as these judgments are, they are deserved. God is the Judge of the world!

• Revelation 17 goes back and fills in some of what has already happened during the Tribulation. Babylon was begun by Nimrod who was a rebel before the Lord.

4. With her the kings of the earth committed adultery.
5. The inhabitants of the earth were intoxicated with the wine of her adulteries.
6. A woman sitting on a scarlet beast; dressed in purple and scarlet
7. Glittering with gold, precious stones and pearls; she holds a golden cup filled with abominable stings and the filth of her adulteries
8. On her forehead is written Mystery Babylon the Great, the Mother of Prostitutes and of the Abomination of the Earth.
9. Drunk with the blood of the saints, the blood of those who bore testimony of Jesus.

The vision of the Beast is described as follows:

• Had seven heads
• And ten horns
• The prostitute rides it
• The beast was, and is not, and will come up out of the bottomless pit and go to his destruction.

Perdition is mentions in this chapter. It means ruin or loss or damnable.

Matthew 5:14-16 
V14- Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid. V15- Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house. V16- Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.

• This is personal that we are the lights of the world.
• If we live for Christ, we will glow like lights, showing others what Christ is like. 
• We hide our light by (1) being quiet when we should speak, (2) going along with the crowd, (3) denying the light, (4) letting sin dim ur light, (5) not explaining our light to others, (6) ignoring the needs of other.
• We are to be beacons of truth, not allowing our lights to shut off to the rest of the world.
• In the beginning God said, "Let there be light," and there was light. Genesis 1:3
• Light reveals danger
• Light will expose what's in the darkness.
• We are a reflection of Christ.
• But you are not like that, for you are a chosen people. You are a kingdom of priests, God's hold nation, His very own possession. This is so you can show others the goodness of God, for He called you out of the darkness into His wonderful light. 1 Peter 2:9
• A Christian may be the only sermon some people may ever see. So, what kind of light are we reflecting? What vision is casted?
• Choose you this day, whom  you will  serve, as for  me and  my house, we  will  serve the Lord. Joshua 24:15
• We are both salt and light.
• You are the salt of the earth. But what good is salt if it has lost its flavor? Can you make it useful again? It will be thrown out and trampled underfoot as worthless. Matthew 5:13
• What does light do? It conquers the darkness; Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path. Psalm 119:105
• The purpose of light: Light is a witness to the lost; Light is shines on our good works; Light is to be a witness for our Lord.

1 John 3:1-24

• We are to love one another
• We are called the children of God. That's how much He loves us.
• Loves hides a multitude of sins. 1 Peter 4:8
• There is a difference between committing a sin and continuing to sin.  Even the most faithful believers commit sin but they do not cherish a particular sin and choose to commit it. A believer who commits a sin confesses and is forgiven.
• We are to believe in God and obey in this age of "grace."
• Dear friends, if we deliberately continue sinning after we have received a full knowledge of the truth, there is no other sacrifice that will cover these sins.  There will be nothing to look forward to but the terrible expectation of God's judgment and the raging fire that will consume His enemies.   Hebrews 10:26-27
• God's nature abides in us.
• Pride goes before destruction and haughtiness before a fall. Proverbs 16:18
• Jesus took away sin's hold over us.
• A person who has no love is still dead. 1 John 3:14
• Anyone who hates another Christian is really a murderer at heart. 1 John 3:15
• Our tongues can be deadly.
• Those who obey God's commandments live in fellowship with Him, and He with them. And we know He lives in us because the Holy Spirit lives in us.  1 John 3:24

v1 But very early on Sunday morning the women came to the tomb, taking the spices they had prepared. v2 They found that the stone covering the entrance had been rolled aside.  v3 So they went in, but they couldn't find the body of the Lord, Jesus. v4 They were puzzled, trying to think what could have happened to it. Suddenly, two men appeared to them, clothed in dazzling robes. v5 The women were terrified and bowed low before them. Then the men asked, "Why are you looking in a tomb for someone who is alive?

• Jesus told them (His disciples) that He would arise in three days but they didn't understand this.
• Everything God made was good until the serpent.
• God had a plan for us even before Adam and Eve sinned.
• God's truth is marching on. His truth will set us free.
• Jesus is the truth, the way and the life. John 14:6
• We must transition because change is going to come.
• Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things are passed away. 2 Corinthians 5:17
• Speak the word of God.
• Immediately Jesus made the disciples get into the boat and go on ahead of Him to the other side, while He dismissed the crowd.  After He had dismissed them, He went up on a mountainside by Himself to pray. Later that night, He was there alone, and the boat was already a considerable distance from land, buffeted by the waves because the wind was against it. Shortly before dawn Jesus went out to them, walking on the lake. When the disciples saw Him walking on the lake, they were terrified. "It's a ghost," they said, and cried out in fear. But Jesus immediately said to them; "Take courage! It is I. Don't be afraid."  Matthew 14:22-27

• Furious with rage, Nebuchadnezzar summoned Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego. So these men were brought before the kind, and Nebuchadnezzar said to them, "Is it true, that you do not serve my gods or worship the image of gold I have set up? Now when you hear the sound of the horn, flute, zither, lyre, harp, pipe and all kinds of music, if you are ready to fall down and worship the image I made, very good. But if you do not worship it, you will be thrown immediately into a blazing furnace. Then what god will be able to rescue you from my hand?"  Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego replied to him, "King Nebuchadnezzar, we do not need to defend ourselves before you in this matter. If we are thrown into the blazing furnace, the God we serve is able to deliver us from it, and He will deliver us from Your Majesty's hand. But even if He does not, we want you to know, Your Majesty, that we will not serve your gods or worship the image of gold you have set up."  Then Nebuchadnezzar was furious with them and his attitude toward them changed. He ordered the furnace heated seven times hotter than usual and commanded some of the strongest soldiers in his army to tie up Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego and throw them into the blazing furnace. So these men, wearing their robes, trousers, turbans and other clothes, were bound and thrown into the blazing furnace.  The king's command was so urgent and the furnace so hot that the flames of the firwe killed the soldiers who took up Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, and these men, firmly tied, fell into the blazing furnace.  Then King Nebuchadnezzar leaped to his feet in amazement and asked his advisers, "Weren't there three men that we tied up and threw into the fire?" They replied, "Certainly, Your Majesty."  He said, "Look! I see four men walking around in the fire, unbound and unharmed, and the fourth looks like a son of the gods."  Nebuchadnezzar then approached the opening of the blazing furnace and shouted, "Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, servants of the Most High God, come out! Come here!"  Daniel 3:13-26
• Go  - Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.  Matthew 28:19
• At the name of Jesus every knee shall bow, of those in heaven  and  of those  on earth and  under the earth and that every tongue should  confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.  Philippians 2:10-11

1 Peter 4:1-19  Living for God

• Christ suffered and so shall we. So we need to arm ourselves with the same attitude that Christ had.
• Love everyone always, for love covers a multitude of sins.
• God will judge everyone. We are not to judge.
• We are to glorify God through our suffering.
• v17 - For the time has come for judgment to begin with God's household, and if it begins with us, what will the outcome be for those who disobey the gospel of God?
• v19 - So those who suffer according to God's will should, while doing what is good, entrust themselves to a faithful Creator.
• Note: Sin nature is removed when we become Christians. This does not mean that Christians will not sin once saved, it means that we, as Christians will not want to sin.

Sermon
Hebrews 12:1-2 - Therefore, since we also have such a large cloud of witnesses surrounding us, let us lay aside every weight and the sin that so easily ensnares us. Let us run with endurance the race that lies before us, keeping our eyes on Jesus, the source and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that lay before Him endured a cross and despised the shame and has sat down at the right hand of God's throne.
Subject: "Looking For Jesus in the New Year"

• Revelation 21:5 - Then the One seated on the throne said, "Behold I make all things new. And he also said, "Write, because these words are faithful and true."
• We need to enter the new year filled with a sense of opportunity but know that there are challenges as well.
• We should walk with an acute sense of God surrounding us.
• We must believe that God is God.
• We must spend time with God, having a relationship with Him, developing our faith in Him.
• God is with us in all we do.
• Philippians 4:8 - Finally brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable - if there is any moral excellence and if there is any praise - dwell on these things.
• We need to "look back" on what has happened in our lives. Look back makes us recall what God has done for us. Reflecting and recalling the things we've been through as God guides us, strengthens us.
• Psalm 136:1 - Give thanks to the Lord, for He is Good. His love is eternal.
• We need to "look on the inside" for that is where God looks.
• Psalm 51:6 - Behold, you desire truth int he inner self, and in the hidden You shall make me to know wisdom.
• Take an inventory of yourself. Do you have a right relationship with God? With others?
• Psalm 139:23 - Search me God, and know my heart; test me and know my concerns.
• We should "look to Jesus" for He is the way. Just a closer walk with Thee.
• Psalm 27:4 - I have asked one thing from the Lord, it is what I desire: to dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, gazing on the beauty of the Lord and seeking Him in His temple.
• Luke 10:2 - Therefore said he unto them, "The harvest is truly great, but the laborers are few: pray you therefore the Lord of the harvest that He would send forth laborers into His harvest.
• We should "look forward" - Matthew 11:28-30 - "Come to Me all of you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. All of you take up My yoke and learn from Me, because I am gentle and humble in heart and you will find rest for yourselves. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light."
• Blessed assurance, Jesus is mine.

• We have cast off our old nature.
• We are a new creatures.
• Be without guile, like a child.
• v4/5 - As you come to Him, the living Stone-rejected by humans but chosen by God and precious to Him-you also, like living stones, are being built into a spiritual house to be a hold priesthood, offering spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God. 
• Our cornerstone is Jesus.
• We are called out of darkness into His marvelous light.
• Conduct yourself righteously. 
• We are to be good witnesses.
• v15 - For it is God's will that by doing good you should silence the ignorant talk of foolish people.

• Renew your minds to the things of God.
• We are to be obedient to Christ.
• v13 - So think clearly and exercise self-control. Look forward to the special blessings that will come to you at the return of Jesus Christ.
• We cannot become holy on our own, but God gives us His Holy Spirit to help us obey and to give us power to overcome sin. Don't use the excuse that can't help slipping sin. Rely on God's power to free you from sin's grip. 
• THE DAYS OF LIFE - Genesis 6:3 - And the Lord said, My spirit shall not always strive with man,for that he also is flesh: yet his days shall be a hundred and twenty years.; Psalm 90:10 - The days of our years are threescore years and ten; and if by reason of strength they be fourscore years, yet is their strength labour and sorrow; for it is soon cut off, and we fly away.

• v23 - For you have been born again. Your new life did not come from your earthly parents because the life they gave you will end in death. But this new life will last forever because it comes from he eternal, living word of God.

"If anyone deserves your help, it is he," they said, v5 for he loves the Jews and even built a synagogue for us." v6 So Jesus went with them. But just before they arrived at the house, the officer sent some friends to say, "Lord, don't trouble yourself by coming to my house, for I am not worthy of such an honor. v7 I am not even worthy to come and meet you. Just say the word from where you are, and my servant will be healed. v8 I know because I am under the authority of my superior officers, and I have authority over my soldiers. I only need to say, 'Go,' and they go, or 'Come,' and they come. And if I say to my slaves, 'Do this or that,' they do it." v9 When Jesus heard this, He was amazed. Turning to the crowd, He said, "I tell you, I haven't seen faith like this in all the land of Israel!"

• Do you have faith?
• Picture a unit of soldiers marching and one centurion on a horse, in command of the soldiers. He is confident, a man on a mission with a course and purpose. This is the Roman officer.

GREAT FAITH - Why the Roman Officer had it.
1. The officer had heard the Word of Jesus and sent elders to go and ask Jesus to heal his servant.
2. The officer had humility, saying "I am not worthy."
3. The officer was a person of compassion because he cared enough for his servant to ask for healing.

• Great faith can..........save a nation; uplift a burdened family; calm the masses; heal the sick.

• Isaiah 40:29-31 - He gives strength to those who are tired; to the ones who lack power, He gives renewed energy. v30 Even youths get tired and weary' even strong young men clumsily stumble. v31 But those who wait for the Lord's help find renewed strength; they rise up as if they had eagles' wings, they run without growing weary, they walk without getting tired.
• Surrender your life to Him.
• Depend on Him in all things because only God has the power to bring all things back to Him.
• God loves us.
• Matthew 11:28-30 - Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. v29 Take my yoke on you and learn from Me, because I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. v30 For My yoke is easy to bear, and my load is not hard to carry."

Controlling the Tongue

• Those who teach will be judged more strictly.
• Anyone who is never at fault in whatever they say is perfect.
• No human begin can tame the tongue.
• The tongue is restless evil, filled with deadly poison.
• Harboring bitter envy and selfish ambition is no wisdom that comes down from heaven but is earthly, unspiritual and demonic.
• To use proper speech you must not only say the right words at the right time but also not say what you shouldn't.
• Examples of an untamed tongue include gossiping, putting others down, bragging, manipulating others, false teaching, exaggerating, complaining, flattering and lying.
• Before we speak, we should ask, "Is what I want to say true?" "Is it necessary?" "Is it kind?"

Phi. 3  v14 - I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.

• In Ephesians 3, Paul is fighting for Gentiles right to be Christians.
• Jews and Gentiles are to be viewed as one with Christ.
• Paul had the Great Commission to to into the world to preach the word of God.
• 1 Corinthians 10:31 -Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God.

Ways We Are Pulled

1. Downward pull - not speaking a kind word but always seems to say you know Christ. Always finding fault with others. You don't feel good about yourself, so you demean others.
2. Inward pull - self centered, self righteous and having own agenda. 
3. Backward pull - lack of vision for progress or anything else.
4. Press outward pull - pushing upward toward Christ. Wanting to walk the correct way.
5. Upward pull - happy in Christ in spite of what's going on around them.

Annual Conference Closing

Saturday, the A.M.E. North Texas Conference closed out at North Star Missionary Baptist Church in Tyler, with an inspiring Sunday School lesson taught by Rev. Houston. Jeremiah 33:2-6 was the lesson with a reference in Habakkuk 1:5-6.

After the procession of ministers, Bishop Vashti Murphy McKinzie brought the "Word" from Jonah 1:1-2 & 3:1-2.

Subject: Spiritual Illumination

• Kids have knowledge all around them these days but not the wisdom to understand or discern right from wrong.
• The Holy Spirit can only illuminate us if we allow.
• Only "man" has a spirit.
• Our spirits connect with and communicate with God.
• Isaiah 55:8-9 - "For My thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways My ways," declares the Lord. "As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways and My thoughts than your thoughts.
• God's wisdom is contrary to that of the world's.
• Our lives with God will forever be changed.
• We still must study the Word, to continue our spiritual illumination.
• 1 John 4:1 - Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.
• 2 Timothy 2:15 - Study to show yourself approved unto God, a workman that needs not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.
• Psalm 37:25 - I have been young and now am old; yet have I not seen the righteous forsaken, nor his seed begging bread. (This is confirmation that if we believe in God, He will not forsake us)

James 1:1-27

• When trouble comes learn to endure and grow from it. Trials will make you stronger in character.
• A doubtful mind is unsettled and will receive nothing from God.
• God blesses those who patiently endure testing for they will receive the crown of life that God has promised to those who love Him.
• v13-14 - When tempted, no one should say, "God is tempting me." For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does He tempt anyone; but each person is tempted when they are dragged away by their own evil desire and enticed.
• v17 - Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.
• Wisdom means practical discernment. It begins with respect for God.

John 12:1-3

v1 - Six days before the Passover, Jesus came to Bethany, where Lazarus lived, whom Jesus had raised from the dead.

v2 - Here a dinner was given in Jesus' honor. Martha served, while Lazarus was among those reclining at the table with him.

v3 - Then Mary took about a pint of pure nard, an expensive perfume; she poured it on Jesus' feet and wiped his feet with her hair. And the house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume.

Subject: "Enter to Worship, Then What?"

• Enter to worship Him, depart to serve Him!
• God created us to worship Him.
• Worship means to give honor and reverence to.
• Not everyone was happy with Jesus and wanted to disrupt things.
• The priests were upset with Jesus for raising Lazarus. Because of Jesus, many deserted the priests' teachings to follow Jesus.
• Matthew 26:6-13 - v6 - While Jesus was in Bethany in the home of Simon the Leper, v7 - a woman came to Him with an alabaster jar of very expensive perfume, which she poured on His head as He was reclining at the table. v8 - When the disciples saw this, they were indignant. "Why this waste?" they asked. v9 - "This perfume could have been sold at a high price and the money given to the poor." v10 - Aware of this, Jesus said to them, "Why are you bothering this woman? She has done a beautiful thing to me. v11- The poor you will always have with you, but you will not always have me. v12- When she poured this perfume on my body, she did it to prepare me for burial. v13- Truly I tell you, wherever this gospel is preached throughout the world, what she has done will also be told, in memory of her."
• Mark 14:3-11
• Why Judas as the betrayer? He knew the people. He was always in their mix. John 18:1-2 When He had finished praying, Jesus left with His disciples and crossed the Kidron Valley. On the other side there was a garden, and He and His disciples went into it. v2- Now Judas, who betrayed Him, knew the place, because Jesus had often met there with His disciples.
• John 6:66-70 - From this time many of His disciples turned back and no longer followed Him. v67- "You do not want to leave too, do you?" Jesus asked the Twelve. v68- Simon Peter answered Him, "Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. v69- We have come to believe and to know that you are the Holy One of God." v70- Then Jesus replied, "Have I not chosen you, the Twelve? Yet one of you is a devil!"
• Jesus already know all.
• We must bless His holy name.

 2 Samuel 7:25a - And now, Lord God, keep forever the promise you have made concerning your servant and his house.

Hebrews 1214-29 continued and Hebrews 13:1-25

• We must worship God in spirit and in truth.
• Hebrews 12 v22-28 - But you have come to Mount Zion, to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem. You have come to thousands upon thousands of angels in joyful assembly, to the church of the firstborn, whose names are written in heaven. You have come to God, the Judge of all, to the spirits of the righteous made perfect, to Jesus the mediator of a new covenant, and to the sprinkled blood that speaks a better word than the blood of Abel.  See to it that you do not refuse Him who speaks. If they did not escape when they refused Him who warned them on earth, how much less will we, if we turn away from Him who warns us from heaven?  At that time His voice shook the earth, but now He has promised, "Once more I will shake not only the earth but also the heavens."  The words "once more" indicate the removing of what can be shaken-that is, created things-so that what cannot be shaken may remain.  Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us be thankful, and so worship God acceptably with reverence and awe, for our "God is a consuming fire."
• Hewbrews 13 v1 - Keep on loving one another as brothers and sisters.
• God said, "I will never fail you. I will never forsake you."
• Some were teaching that keeping the Old Testament ceremonial laws and rituals were important for salvation. But these laws were useless for conquering a person's evil thoughts and desires. The laws could influence conduct but they couldn't change the heart.
• Lasting changes in conduct begin when the Holy Spirit lives in each of us.
• v15 - Through Jesus, therefore, let us continually offer to God a sacrifice of praise-the fruit of lips that openly profess His name.

Ecclesiastes 3:1 - There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens.
Subject: "Is This Your Season?"

• Season is a period of time.
• We don't seem to have a problem with "if". We have a problem with "when" God will do what He says.
• Isaiah 54:17 - No weapon formed against you shall prosper, and every which rises against you in judgment, you shall condemn. This is the heritage of the servants of the Lord, and "their righteousness is from Me", says the Lord.
• 1 John 4:4 Greater is He that is in you than he that is in the world.
• Matthew 16:18 - And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.
• Satan is not our biggest foe. We are.
• Romans 8:28 - And we know that to them that love God all things work together for good, to them that are called according to His purpose.
• God never changes no matter what we go through or do.
• Our lives revolve around the SON (Jesus).
• God measures seasons by truth and revelations.
• We must have a right relationship with God.
• Everything in our lives has a season.
• God is not trying to catch us off guard. We need to listen to the Holy Spirit.
• Jesus challenges us and changes us.
• We must welcome the challenge and the change.
• God is preparing us for our reward.
• Matthew 9:37 - The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few.

    It was spring, but it was summer I wanted, the warm days and the great outdoors.
    It was summer, but it was fall I wanted, the colorful leaves and the cool, dry air.
    It was fall, but it was winter I wanted, the beautiful snow and the joy of the holiday season.
    It was winter, but it was spring I wanted, the warmth and the blossoming of nature.
    I was a child, but it was adulthood I wanted, the freedom and respect.
    I was 20, but it was 30 I wanted, to be mature and sophisticated.
    I was middle-aged, but it was 20 I wanted, the youth and the free spirit.
    I was retired, but it was middle-age I wanted, the presence of mind without limitations.
    My life was over and I never got what I wanted.

• Philippians 4:11-12 –  v11 Not that I speak in respect of want: for I have learned, in whatsoever state I am, therewith to be content. v12 I know both how to be abased, and I know how to abound: everywhere and in all things I am instructed both to be full and to be hungry, both to abound and to suffer need.
• We are the sheep of the pasture.
• We have the good shepherd to watch over us.
• Luke 15:4 - What man of you, having a hundred sheep, and having lost one of them, does not leave the ninety and nine in the wilderness and go after that which is lost, until he finds it?
• We are like sheep. God cares and will find us.
• Sheep cannot make it without their shepherd....and so it is with Christians.
• If we are too busy in life with things, we miss that still, small voice. As Christians, we must take the time and be still.

Sheep will lie down when....

1. They are full
2. They are secure
3. They are content

Christians....

1. Be filled with the Word of God and His Spirit
2. Be secure in the Word of the Lord
3. And if we are filled with the Word and secure in it then we are content.

• God has prepared a place for us
• 1 Corinthians 10:12-13 - v12 So, you think you are standing firm be careful that you don't fall! v13 No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; He will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, He will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.
• John 14:18 - I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you.
• If we trust in God, we have no worries because God has worked out everything for us. If we only but TRUST in Him.

Hebrews 10:1-39

Christ's Sacrifice Once for All

• Jesus came by grace and truth.
• We know that grace and law do not walk together.
• Jesus shed His blood for the remission of our sins. This sacrifice is permanent.
• Jesus paid it all!
• Speaking and living the Word of God allows us to work out our salvation. (Philippians 2:12)
• Jesus took away our sin-nature.
• vs16-17 - "This is the covenant I will make with them after that time, says the Lord. I will put my laws in their hearts, and I will write them on their minds." Then He adds: "Their sins and lawless acts I will remember no more."  This is the new covenant.
• Christians are to encourage, lift up and love one another. They are to come together as one in the Lord.
• vs 35-36 - You need to persevere so that when you have done the will of God, you will receive what He has promised.  For, "In just a little while, He who is coming will come and will not delay."
• v 38 - And, "But my righteous one will live by faith. And I take no pleasure in the one who shrinks back."

Sermon

Mark 2:3-4 - Some men came, bringing to Him a paralyzed man, carried by four of them.  Since they could not get him to Jesus because of the crowd, they made an opening in the roof above Jesus by digging through it and then lowered the mat the man was lying on.
Subject: Friendship

In Christ Jesus we have some one who is closer than a friend. (Proverbs 18:24)
In this time period homes were opened to the streets. Jesus was in town and a crowd had formed at a home. Four men brought their afflicted friend to Jesus.
They asked nothing in the way of a payment to deliver him.

Wrong Reasons to Come to the House of the Lord

What can Jesus do for me
To see what others are wearing or doing
Always wanting daily and physical needs to be met by Jesus
To get noticed for a better position or office

Right Reasons to Come to the House of the Lord

We should come to worship God in Spirit and in truth. (John 4:24)
To help others instead of focusing on ones self.
Where two or more gather in His name...... (Matthew 18:20)

Three Kinds of Friends

1. Helpless one - cannot help himself and dependent on others.
2. Helping one - provides true friendship
       a. Motive - unselfish, compassionate and caring.
       b. Method - joint effort, each man had a corner to bear.
       c. Manner - persistent, can overcome obstacles and doesn't give up.
3. Healing one - Jesus, who first loved us, sacrificed Himself for us.
       John 15:13 - There is no greater love than to lay down one's life for his friends.

Hebrews 8 and 9

• Jesus paid it all and is now in heaven interceding on our behalf.
• v1/2  - Now the main point of what is being said is this: We have this kind of high priest, who sat down at the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the heavens, a minister of the sanctuary and the true tabernacle that was set up by the Lord and not man.
• v6 - But Jesus has now obtained a superior ministry, and to that degree He is the mediator of a better covenant, which has been legally enacted on better promises.
• v13 - By saying, a new covenant, He has declared that the first is old. And what is old and aging is about to disappear.
• Hebrews Chapter 9 v1-5 - The tabernacle was a movable temple, made by man but instructions came from God.
• v6-10 - Christ is our unblemished sacrifice.
• Christ, having undertaken to be our High Priest, could not enter into heaven until He had shed His blood on the cross for us.
• None of us can enter, either into God's gracious presence here, or in heaven but by the blood of Jesus.
• v11-14 - Our High Priest entered into heaven one and for all, obtaining eternal redemption.
• The Holy Spirit signifies and shows us that the Old Testament sacrifices only freed the outward man from ceremonial uncleanness and fitted him for some outward privileges. 
• What gave such power to the blood of Christ:? It was Christ's offering Himself without any sinful stain in His nature or life (unblemished).
• v15-22 - All, by sin, were become guilty before God, had forfeited everything that is good; but God, willing to show the greatness of His mercy, proclaimed a covenant of grace.
• v22-28 - Evidence shows that the sacrifices of Christ are infinitely better than those of the law, which could neither procure pardon for sin, nor impart power against it.
•  Jesus the Christ, by one sacrifice, has destroyed the works of Satan, so that believers may be made righteous, holy and be at peace.

• The mother did not become discouraged when Jesus said not a word.
• She was persistent in the right way by saying, "Lord help me."
• Jess is faithful and just to hear our pleas.
• The woman accepted what Jesus said.
