Welcome to Brown Chapel/Avant, Mt. Pleasant & Shiloh

Prayer: Pastor Baggett

Scripture: 1 Peter 5:6-9 - Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time: Casting all your care upon him; for he cares for you.  Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion walks about seeking whom he may devour; Whom resist steadfast in the faith, knowing that the same afflictions are accomplished in your brethren that are in the world.   Philippians 2:6-11 - Make my joy complete by being of the same mind, having the same love, being in harmony and of one mind;  Doing nothing through envy of through pride, but with low thoughts of self, let everyone take others to be better than himself;  Not looking everyone to his private good, but keeping in mind the things of others.  Let this mind be in you which was in Christ Jesus,  To whom, though himself in the form of God, it did not seem that to take for oneself was to be like God;  But he made himself as nothing, taking the form of a servant, being made like men;  And being seen in form as a man, he took the lowest place, and let himself be put to death, even the death of the cross. For this reason God has put him in the highest place and has given to him the name which is greater than every name;  So that at the name of Jesus every knee may be bent, of those in heaven and those on earth and those in the underworld,  And that very tongue may give witness that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

Subject: Searching for Humility

  • We are not just me, myself and I.
  • We must have humility in ourselves and have a loving spirit towards others.
  • Jesus's life was humility. He was a living example for all of us.
  • His humility was the way to our salvation.
  • Humility is not a weakness.
  • God gives grace to the humble.
  • Humility is the soil of which the fruit of the spirit grows.  Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.
  • Don't become prideful.
  • Pride showed up in the Garden of Eden & has been around for a very long time.
  • Proverbs 16:18 - Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall.
  • Satan was so prideful that he thought to be more than God.
  • In search of humility: humble & submit ourselves before God.
  • Proverbs 3:5-6 - Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him and he will make your paths straight.
  • We must stand firm on your faith and be in the will of God.
  • Resist the devil.
  • Study to show thyself approved unto God. 2 Timothy 2:15
  • Be ready at all times.

We appreciate everyone who joined us. The fellowship was spirit filled and uplifting.

Prayer: Minister Dorothy M.

Scripture: Philippians 2:5 - Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus

Subject: How to Have the Mind of Christ
  • We must guard our minds against the world.
  • Satan is always trying to sell us "sin"
  • But we have the Holy Spirit. He reminds us of scripture.
  • We must listen and then put into action what the word of God says.
  • A war is a prolong ordeal   a battle is short-term
  • 2 Corinthians 10:4-5 - For the arms with which we are fighting are not those of the flesh, but are strong before God for the destruction of high places; Putting an end to reasonings, and every high thing which is lifted up against the knowledge of God, and causing every thought to come under the authority of Christ.
  • Luke 12:29 - And do not give overmuch thought to your food and drink, and let not your mine be full of doubts.
  • Lies - Satan is the father of lies. He will use God's name against us by saying that God is doing bad things to us.
  • We must not doubt. We must keep the faith.
  • 2 Corinthians 4:4 - The eyes of those who do not believe are made blind by Satan who is the god of this world. He does not want the light of the Good News to shine in their hearts.
  •  We need to check ourselves.
  • 2 Timothy 3:7 - Ever learning, and never coming to the knowledge of what is true.
  • John 3:20 - The light is hated by everyone whose acts are evil and he does not come to the light for fear that his acts will be seen.
  • Revelation 3:20 - Behold, I stand at the door and knock: if any man hears my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me, said Jesus.
  • Romans 1:28 - God allowed people who persistently rejected Him to be given over to a reprobated mind, leading them to engage in sinful actions without remorse or restraint.
  • We need to renew our minds and spirits
  • Romans 12:2 - And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable and perfect, will of God.

Welcome from Brown Chapel/Avant & Mt. Pleasant

Prayer: Rev. Pelton

Scripture: Philippians 4:6 - Be careful for nothing; but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your request be made known unto God.

Subject: With Thanksgiving

  • We have so much to be thankful for. The Word, our families, etc.
  • We need to be reminded to be thankful sometimes.
  •  Do we fall into toxic thinking and forget to be thankful and prayerful in our lives?
  • We should have an attitude of gratitude.
  • We should apply the Word of God to transform & renew our minds.
  • We should surround ourselves with loving and like minded people.
  • We should pray without ceasing (1 Thessalonians 5:17) and be still and know that He is God (Psalm 46:10).
  • 2 Corinthians 9:15 - Thanks be to God for His unspeakable gift.
  • No matter what's happening in our lives, we as Christians have thanksgiving. We have the power of God to sustain us, strengthen us, we have to whole armor of God, we have the salvation from God.  We can face any situation because we have God, Jesus & the Holy Spirit on our side.
  • Romans 8:28 - And we know that all things work together for food to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.
  • Won't God do it!!!!
  • And the peace of God that surpasses all understanding will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.  Philippians 4:7

Welcome From Brown Chapel/Avant & Mt. Pleasant

Prayer: Rev. Pelton

Scripture: Philippians 3:13-14 - Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself to have attained this.  Instead I am single-minded: Forgetting the things that are behind and reaching out for the things that are ahead, with this goal in mind, I strive toward the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.

Subject: Letting Go Of The Past

  • God has a purpose for our lives.
  • There's nothing we can do to change the past.
  • We must look forward and press toward the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.
  • Don't look back; don't stay in neutral; stop whining; don't stay in stagnate waters.

 Greetings from Brown Chapel/Avant, Shiloh

and Mt. Pleasant Baptist

Prayer: Rev. Pelton

Scripture: Philippians 4:6-9 - Rejoice in the Lord always.Again I say rejoice! Let everyone see your gentleness. The Lord is near!  Do not be anxious about anything. Instead, in every situation, through prayer and petition with thanksgiving, tell your requests to God.  And the peace of God. And the peace of God that surpasses all understanding will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.  Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is worthy of respect, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if something is excellent or praiseworthy, think about these things.

Text: Encouragement for the Pandemic of our lives

  • Disappointment in life is inevitable.
  • Discouragement is different. It is manageable.
  • Be encouraged by looking to God.
  • Don't allow your circumstance to overwhelm you.
  • Be discouraged causes confusion.  But remember God is not the author of confusion, but of peace, as in all churches of the saints. 1 Corinthians 14:33
  • A double minded man is unstable......
  • Even Jesus was discouraged - Matt 26:38 - Then he said to them, "My soul is deeply grieved, even to the point of death......."
  • But Jesus did not allow hopelessness to turn away from God.
  • Dealing with discouragement: admit that we are discouraged - Confess our sins to God and he will be faith......  recognize that we are dealing with spiritual wickedness ....
  • Stay hungry and not greedy.

August 30, 2020

Greetings from Brown Chapel/Avant; Shiloh and Mt. Pleasant Baptist on this last Sunday in August!

Prayer: Rev. I. Pelton

Scripture: Philippians 2:5 - Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus.

Topic: Having a positive outlook in today's world

  • We want to be like Christ.
  • We must think positively even in this world of today.
  • When they go low, we go high.
  • Lord lift me up and let me stand. Lord plant by feet on higher ground.  Psalms 40:1-3
Three things to be positive in this world of today:
  • Philippians 4:8 - (1) Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, things on these things. (2) We must look upon positive sights. Look unto the hills from which our help comes - Psalm 121:1-2; Jesus is the author and finisher of our faith - Hebrews 12:2 and  (3) We must perform good deeds - Colossians 3:23 - And whatsoever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men.
  • Faith without works is dead . James 2:14-26
  • We must continue to believe and assemble when possible.

Conference Call!

Brown Chapel & Avant Church Families and our neighboring church family, Shiloh Baptist, held our first community-wide conference call.

Psalms 42:5 - Why are you depressed, O my soul? Why are you upset? Wait of God! For I will again give thanks to my God for his saving intervention.
Subject: How Do We Beat The Blues?

We are dealing with the Covid-19 virus, unemployment, life's uncertainties but we, as Christians, have hope.

Five Points

  1. We should be focused on things that are positive. From Philippians 4:8 - Whatever is true, whatever is worthy of respect, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, it something is excellent or praiseworthy, think on those things.
  2. Look for the purpose of what God wants from us. In other words, His will be done. (a) Our trials and tribulations are going to happen throughout our lives. They should strengthen us.
  3. Utilize God's promises for us.  Proverbs 3:5-6 - Trust in the Lord with all your heart; and lean not on your own understanding.  Acknowledge Him all your ways, and He will direct your paths.
  4. Take time to encourage others.
  5. Sing praises to our God! Give God the praise. Psalms 150:1 Praise ye the Lord, Praise God in His sanctuary: praise Him in the firmament of His power.  Romans 15:11 - And again, Praise the Lord, all ye Gentiles; and laud Him, all ye people. (a) Obedience is better than sacrifice.

Sunday School
The Holy Spirit - Part 3
Question from 2nd Sunday...What does "give up the ghost" mean?

Give up the ghost – the original Hebrew word was gaw-vah (ghost) meaning to breathe our, to exhale.  Giving up the ghost means taking the dying breath.
A few examples of this are Acts 5:5-10; Acts 12:23 & Luke 23:46 (King James version)
How the Holy Spirit works in one’s life

It's impossible to follow God unless we are led by the Spirit. And the only way to be led by the Spirit is to follow God's command to be filled by the Spirit (Ephesians 5:18). Interestingly, God contrasts being filled with the Spirit with being drunk. Somebody who is drunk with wine or alcohol is controlled by and consumed by alcohol. But somebody who is "drunk in the Spirit" is controlled and consumed by the Spirit, who helps us live holy lives.
How are we filled with the Spirit? The Holy Spirit entered you when you decided to give your life to Christ, to become a Christian. But we need to continually ask the Holy Spirit to lead us, to guide us, to help us do the things God wants us to do. When we're growing as Christians, we should allow the Spirit to take control over more and more areas of our lives.
The Holy Spirit plays many roles… from John 14:15-27 “I will not leave you as orphans,”  Jesus promises that the Spirit will bring us peace.  Jesus also says that the Spirit will help us recall the things we’ve learned about God.
In John 16, Jesus calls the Holy Spirit, a “Counselor” who will guide us in or everyday lives. One way He does this is by convicting us of sin. God wants us to get rid of the things that displease Him, and the only way to identify those things is to be convicted by the Spirit. The Spirit works through our conscience to make us aware of sin in our lives.
From Romans 8 – The Holy Spirit will help us stop sinning and do the things that pleases God. Also, the Spirit helps us pray. He helps s in times when we don’t know what to say in prayer and actually intercedes for us.
Now, does the Spirit do everything for us….NO! We are responsible for studying and praying and asking for guidance.

Question? How do we know when we are led by the Holy Spirit and the evil spirit?
Galatians 5:22-23 - “the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.”  If these things are evident in our lives, then we are on the correct path. Since we live by the Holy Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit.
Seven Attributes of the Holy Spirit
  1. The Holy Spirit is a loving Comforter. When we face trials and tribulations, whose words are more important to comfort us: someone who doesn't know us or love us, or someone who knows every single thing about and loves us anyway?!
  2. The Holy Spirit is a faithful Comforter. People will fail us and hurt us but the Holy Spirit will never do that. He loves us even until the end.
  3. The Holy Spirit is an untiring Comforter. Sometimes when we try to comfort a person, we find it's beyond our capability and we grow tired and stop. And there are some people who cannot or will not be comforted. In fact, the more you attempt to comfort them, the worse they become. The Holy Spirit never loses heart or becomes weary.
  4. The Holy Spirit is a wise Comforter. We often listen to people for advice, who give the wrong advice as Job's friends did. A person's advice is like the wrong medicine, it could harm you and it doesn't cure what's ailing you. But the Holy Spirit is wise and is able to dissect, cut away and heal us, if we allow it.
  5. The Holy Spirit is a safe Comforter. Often family and friends give unsafe advice steeped in worldly knowledge. But the Holy Spirit is safe. You can rest and trust in Him. You can drink from His cup of consolation and drink fully in the knowledge that there are no bitter dregs in His cup.
  6. The Holy Spirit is an active Comforter. He intercedes for us. He will never leave us or forsake us but will actively lead and guide us in the perfect will of God.
  7. The Holy Spirit is an ever present Comforter. We don't have to send for Him. He's already right here with us. We can reach our to him no matter where we are.
Sermon
Philippians 4:6-9 - Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.  And the peace of God, which passes all understanding, shall keep your hears and minds through Christ Jesus.  Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever  things are just, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.
Subject: Attacking Anxiety
We need to have wisdom and self-control in life
Anxiety's cure is prayer
Take God at His Word!
In God's will we have peace of mind.
Cast all your cares on Him; for He cares for you.  1 Peter 5:7
Worry makes matters worse. There is no value in worrying.
Anxiety Is Focused On.....
  • Worrying about things that may never happen
  • Worrying about things in the past knowing you can't go back to change them
  • Worrying about criticism from others
  • Worrying about one's health
  • Worrying about the problems of the day
Worry pulls tomorrow's clouds over today's sunshine!
Remember what God said in Jeremiah 29:11-13 - "For I know the plans I have for you." declares the Lord, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Then you will call on Me and come and pray to Me, and I will listen to you. You will seek Me and find Me when you seek Me with all your heart."
Jesus has conquered the world, so we really have nothing to worry or be anxious about.
