Welcome from Brown Chapel/Avant, Mt. Pleasant & Shiloh

Prayer: Pastor Baggett

Scripture: Titus 2:11-13 - For the grace of God has come, giving salvation to all men, training us so that, turning away from evil and the desires of this world, we may be living wisely and uprightly in the knowledge of God in this present life;  Looking for the glad hope, that revelation of the glory of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ.

Subject: Your Character Matters

  • Character is a trait that forms a person's nature. It's the sum of one's actions.
  • Good character is God's character.
  • Character affects all aspects of our lives.
  • We must embrace godly principles.
  • God's plan is to have fellowship with mankind.
  • Genesis 1:26-27 - And God said, Let us make man in our image, like us: and let him have rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the air and over the cattle and over all the earth and over every living thing which goes flat on the earth.  And God made man in his image, in the image of God he made him: male and female he made them.
  • So, what is God's image?  JESUS
  • Colossians 1:15 - Who is the image of the unseen God coming into existence before all living things.
  • Hebrews 1:3 - The Son is the radiance of God's glory and the exact representation of his being sustaining all things by his powerful word.
  • Ephesians 4:22-24: To put off your old self, which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful desires, and to be renewed in the spirit of your minds, and to put on the new self, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness.
  • God's purpose is to mold us into the likeness of Jesus, His Son.
  • God is not concerned with our competence but our character.
  • Will God always heal, grant success, etc. NO! Because God is more concerned with our character.
  • Character is the outward expression of our choices.
  • Be of good character.
  • What a mighty God we serve!

Titus Chapter 3 and beginning The Grace of God
  • We are saved to do good.
  • Though we are subject to rulers and authorities, we are to do whatever is good.
  • Do not slander.
  • Be peaceable and considerate and gentle toward everyone.
  • God saved us because of his mercy.
  • Warn a divisive person once and a second time. After that, have noting to do with them.
The Grace of God
We all have heard and know the following portion of verse 9 from 2 Corinthians 12 - And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee.
But let's take a better look.
The Thorn in the Flesh
2 Corinthians 12:7-10 - And lest I should be exalted above measure by the abundance of the revelations, a thorn in the flesh was given to me, a messenger of Satan to buffet me, lest I be exalted above measure.  Concerning this thing I pleaded with the Lord three times that it might depart from me.  And He said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness."  Therefore most gladly I will rather boast in my infirmities, in reproaches, in needs, in persecutions, in distresses, for Christ's sake. For when I am weak, then I am strong.
  • We know that God's grace is unmerited. We cannot earn it or work for it. God's grace is a gift from Him to us.

Sermon by Rev. Edward Hunt
Matthew 7:24-27 - Everyone, then, to whom my words come and who does them, will be like a wise man who made his house on a rock; And the rain came down and there was a rush of waters and the winds were driving against that house, but it was not moved; because it was based on the rock.  And everyone to whom my words come and who does them not, will be like a foolish man who made his house on sand; And the rain came down and there was a rush of waters and the winds were driving against that house; and it came down and great was its fall.
Subject: Who is your rock?!
  • God teaches us to build our souls and hears on a solid rock.
  • Upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not prevail against it. Matthew 16:18
  • We will all have storms in our lives but they are temporary but God is forever.
  • Our anchor is in Jesus Christ.
  • When you have an anchor in Jesus, eventually you "will" have perfect peace.
  • Do not fall away from God.
  • God doesn't want us to die in a hellish body and then go to hell.
  • Keep God in your heart and know that you are blessed beyond measure.
  • Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me.... Psalm 23:4
  • Take refuge in God in all things.
  • Thank, praise and pray to God in good times and in bad.

Titus - Review and Discussion of verses 11-16 & Titus 2:1-10
  • Philippians 3:19 - Their end is destruction, their god is the belly, they exult in their shame, and they think about earthly things. (This verse is referring to Cretans who were considered liars, evil brutes and lazy gluttons.)
  • The elders of the church were to rebuke them sharply, which was sound in the faith.
  • To the pure, all things are pure, but to those who are corrupted and do not believe, nothing is pure.
  • The elders must teach sound doctrine. 1 Corinthians 8:6 - But to us there is but one God, the Father, of whom are all things, and we in Him; and one Lord Jesus Christ, by whom are all things, and we by Him.
  • Older men should be taught to be temperate, have self-control, strong in faith.
  • Older women are taught to be reverent in their lives & not to slander others.
  • Young women are taught to love their husbands & children & to have self-control.
  • Young men are taught to have self-control.
  • The elders, in all things, are to be an example by doing good and having integrity.
Sermon
Galatians 5:19-23 - Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, envying, murders, drunkenness, reveling & such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.  But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, long-suffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.
Subject: The Fruits of the Spirit - What Are You Chewing On?
  • Fast food, we all know or have heard of fast food but do you know the fruit of the Spirit?
  • The things that aren't good for us seems to taste the best.
  • The Fruit is God's gift to mankind.
  • There are two ways of living and the consequences: (1) Living according to the flesh which in disobedient to God's will; (2) Living a fruit filled life (For freedom Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not be subject again to the yoke of slavery.)
  • If you are lead by the Spirit, then you are not under the law.
  • Ephesians 4:26 - "In your anger do not sin."  It's alright to become angry however don't sin against another in your anger.
  • By changing your diet from fast food to healthy food (The Fruits of the Spirit) you are gaining nutritional value and will feel much better.
  • When dealing with less than perfect people, having patience is the mother of all virtues.
  • Make you diet the right choice by feasting on the Fruits of the Spirit.

May 12, 2019 - Mother's Day

Sunday School
Titus 1:1-7
Paul commissioned Titus to show how the good news of Jesus and the power of the Spirit can transform Cretan people from within.
  • Paul has left Titus in Crete to set in order what remains and appoint elders in every city.
  • Titus was an early Christian missionary and church leader.
  • God's elect are "us" - Jews & Gentiles (Christians)
  • We operate under sound doctrine; the truth
  • God didn't just throw a plan together on the spur of the moment. It was planned out before the beginning of time.
  • Eternal life in v2 is explained in 1 John 2:17 - And the world is passing away with all its desires, but the person who does the will of God remains forever.
  • Appointed season in v3 is explained in Acts 1:7 - He told them, "You are not permitted to know the time or periods that the Father has set by His own authority.
  • God our Savior in v3 is explained in 1 Timothy 1:1 - From Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the command of God our Savior and of Christ Jesus our hope ...
  • An elder must be blameless, faithful to his wife, a man whose children believe and  are not open to the charge of being wild and disobedient. This means that the man should not be self-willed seeking gratification for his own personal gains regardless of others; he should not be easily provoked or become hasty with his words; he should not be a drunkard or a brawler.

Sermon
Exodus 1:22; 2:9 - The Pharaoh commanded all his people, 'All sons that are born you must throw into the river, but all daughters you may let live." Pharaoh's daughter said to her, "Take this child and nurse him for me, and I will pay your wages." So the woman took the child and nursed him.
Topic: The Big Payback
  • Moses was a Hebrew child
  • Pharaoh commanded all males to be thrown into the Nile river
  • Pharaoh wanted to wipe out the Hebrew race as Satan wanted to eradicate the line of Jesus.
  • But "love" foiled Pharaoh's plan
  • The same Nile that was to kill Moses delivered him.
  • Pharaoh meant to do evil but God turned in into good
  • Moses had a spiritual foundation taught to him by his mother.
  • I recall your sincere faith that was alive first in your grandmother Lois and in your mother Eunice, and I am sure is in you. Because of this I remind you to rekindle God's gift that you possess through the laying on of my hands. For God did not give us a Spirit of fear but of power and love and self-control. 2 Timothy 1:5-7
