Sunday School
1 Corinthians 3
References: Google, David Guzik, Blue Letter Bible

Carnality in the Corinthian Church
  • Paul warns the Christians of Corinth about their carnal ways.
  • Though they have the Holy Spirit, they are not acting spiritually but of the flesh or immature Christians.
  • The natural man is patterned after Adam and rejects the things of the Spirit. 1 Corinthians 2:14
  • The spiritual man knows the things of God. 1 Corinthians 2:15
  • The carnal man knows the things of God, but still acts more of the flesh.
  • Paul says don't pattern after himself or Apollos (who is mighty in the scripture) but of Jesus who gave all salvation.
  • Rewards aren't given according to our gifts, talents or successes but according to our own labor.
  • Is your foundation built with precious stones or stray, marble or granite?
  • Will what we've built our foundations with be able to stand the fire from God or will they be burned up?
  • Let no one deceive himself. If anyone among you seems to be wise in this age, let him become a fool that he may become wise. For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God. For it is written, "He catches the wise in their own craftiness," and again, "The Lord knows the thoughts of the wise, that they are futile."  1 Corinthians 3:18-20

Sermon
Proverbs 3:5-6 - v5 Thrust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not onto thine own understanding. v6 In all thy ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct they paths.
Subject: Trusting in the Lord
  • Obey means to comply with
  • Perilous means dangerous, unsafe
  • Trust means having confidence or faith in
Three things of Trusting God
  1. God is conscience.  God is all knowing and powerful.
  2. God is concerned.  1 Peter 5:7 - Cast all your cares upon Him, for He cares for you.
  3. God is capable (able). Ephesians 3:20 - Now unto Him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us.
Let not your heart be troubled: you believe in God, believe also in Me. In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you.  And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto Myself: that where I am, there you may be also. And where I go you know, and the way you know.  John 14:1-4

January 11, 2015 - A Wedding

Sunday School
1 Peter 5 1-14
Encouraging and Shepherding God's People in the Midst of Suffering

  • If we believe, we will receive eternal life.
  • Pray unceasingly wherever you are.
  • Elders are to tend to their flock honorably not grudgingly.
  • God sets Himself against the proud but He shows favor to the humble.
  • v10 - Now the God of all grace, who called you to His eternal glory in Christ Jesus, will personally restore, establish, strengthen, and support you after you have suffered a little.
  • Amen means "So Be It"
Sermon
Philippians 3:13-14 - Brothers, I do not consider myself to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and reaching forward to what is ahead, I pursue as my goal the prize promised by God's heavenly call in Christ Jesus.
Subject: Pressing Toward The Mark

  • We want to be like Jesus.
  • We have a goal toward the prize.
  • Goals prepare us for the prize that God has for us.
  • Meditate day and night.
  • Go into the vineyard too, and whatever is right I will give you. Matthew 20:4
  • We should have goals throughout our lives.

S = see your goal
U = understand that there are going to be obstacles.
C = create a positive mental picture.
C = crease our minds of self doubt.
E = embrace the challenge.
S = stay on track.
S = show the world that you can do it.

  • Set specific goals, have a time frame.

Benefits of Goal-setting.........

  1. keeps us from wasting time and energy
  2. produces focus and keeps us from distractions
  3. simplifies decision making processes
  4. delivers us from living in the past
  5. produces persistence and determination

  • Prayer can change a situation
  • Luke 18:1 - And He spake a parable unto them to this end, that men ought always to pray, and not to faint.
  • Isiah 41:10 - So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.
