Homecoming Sunday, October 13, 2013

Sunday School
1 Timothy 4:1-16

  • Do not waste time arguing over godless ideas and old wives tales.
  • Spiritual exercise is more important than physical exercise.
  • Salvation is effective only for those who trust Him.
  • Christian life is filled with struggles and steady opposition but there is joy and peace for Christians, found within the believer's fellowship with Christ.
  • Throughout the time of the church the faithful can expect the defection and active opposition of some who have professed to be Christians (heresy).
  • The driving force behind this opposition to the church is, of course, Satan. The heretics are described as those who follow deceiving spirits and things taught by demons. (2 Corinthians 11:15 - It is no great thing therefore if his ministers also fashion themselves as ministers of righteousness, whose end shall be according to their works; 2 Corinthians 4:4 - in whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of the unbelieving, that the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God, should not dawn upon them; 2 Corinthians 11:3 - But I fear, lest by any means, as the serpent beguiled Eve in his craftiness, your minds should be corrupted from the simplicity and the purity that is toward Christ.)
  • Paul identified two aspects of false teachers: forbidding marriage and commanding abstinence for certain foods. It is possible that these notions came from the thought that the second coming had already occurred.
  • Teachers must be nourished by the Word of God; he must trained in godliness which is a life of faith strengthened by training in the Word of God; a mission/spiritual goal is to bring God's plan of salvation to all who would receive it.
  • Romans 10:14-15 - How then shall they call on Him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in Him whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher?  and how shall they preach, except they be sent? even as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that bring glad tidings of good things!

Sermon
Psalm 70:4
Let all those that seek thee rejoice and be glad in thee; And let such as love thy salvation say continually, Let God be magnified.
Subject: Let God be Magnified

  • This was an urgent prayer by David when threatened by his enemies. David wanted the Lord to come quickly.
  • When we don't magnify the Lord, we are not in His will.
  • And if it seem evil unto you to serve Jehovah, choose you this day whom you will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were beyond the River or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you dwell; but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.  Joshua 24:15
  • Praise is important because it helps us remember who God is.
  • We serve an awesome God and praise enlarges and pleases Him.
  • Let God be magnified!
  • For as he thinks within himself, so is he: Eat and drink saith he to thee; But his heart is not with thee. Proverbs 23:7
  • Whatever you focus on gets bigger.

Three things to Magnify
1.  We can magnify through preaching the Word, for faith comes by hearing and hearing by the Word of God.
2.  We can magnify through praise.  Let them extol Him in the congregation of the people, and praise Him in the assembly of the elders. Psalm 107:32
3  We can magnify through our good works.

Everything that is good and perfect come from God!

Homecoming Service

Old Testament Psalm 100:1-5 - Make a joyful noise unto the Lord, all ye lands. Serve God with gladness; Come before His presence with singing. Know you that Jehovah, He is God: It is He that has made us,a dn we are His: We are His people, and the sheep of His pasture. Enter into His gates with thanksgiving, And into His courts with praise: Give thanks unto Him, and bless His name. For Jehovah is good; His loving kindness endures forever, and His faithfulness unto all generations.
New Testament Philippians 4:8 - Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honorable, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.

Sermon
Matthew 6:25
The Book of Jonah
2 Chronicles 7:14
Subject: Serving The Lord Will Pay Off Afterwhile!

Matthew 6:25 - Therefore I say unto you, be not anxious for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than the food, and the body than the raiment?
The Book of Jonah
2 Chronicles 7:14 - if my people, who are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.
