October 13, 2024 - Homecoming 2024

Scripture: Luke 15:11-16 - A certain man had two sons: and the younger of them said to his father, Father, give me the portion of goods that fall to me.  And he divided unto them his living.  And not many days after the younger son gathered all together, and took his journey into a far country, and there wasted his substance with riotous living.  And when he had spent all, there arose a mighty famine in that land; and he began to be in want. And he went and joined himself to a citizen of that country; and he sent him not his fields to feed swine.  And he would fain have filled his belly with the husks that the swine did eat: and no man gave unto him. 
Subject: There's No Place Like Home

  • Where is home for us?
  • We know the story of the son who left home with his inheritance, because he wanted to get away from home.
  • Are we sometimes fed up with our old lives; curious about the outside world; just wanting to get away from our parents; etc.
  • What we may not understand is that the world is or can be a wicked place while also being an exciting and enticing place.
  • The longer one is out in the world, you tend to get caught up in all the excitement.
  • Sin is like quicksand. The more you struggle against it the more you sink into it.
  • Home is where our memories are, our foundation, our hope of a better life.
  • Revelation 3:20 - Behold, I stand at the door and knock: if any man hears my voice, and opens the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me. 
  • Jesus is the only one who can forgive your sins.
  • Jesus is the way, the truth and the life: no man comes to the Father, but by me. John 14:6
  • In my father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you.  John 14:2
  • There is our earthly home but more importantly, there is our heavenly home.

Homecoming Service

Welcome/Occasion

Good afternoon!

To Pastor Baggett, Rev. Muse, (other ministers) pulpit guest, Homecomers, family and friends.
 

v Again this year, I’m wearing many hats. But that’s ok, I know that with the guidance of the Holy Spirit, I can do this.

v Brown Chapel would like to “Welcome” you to another homecoming. Each year we look forward to this gathering, to see family, old friends and to look back on previous homecoming memories. The occasion of homecoming is wrapped up in this welcome, as well.

v Let’s go back for a bit. Picture, as this is me in the 1960’s, sitting in our old wooden benches, it’s summer, the windows are open, Cousin Chuck and Elizabeth are sitting in the women’s amen corner and Cousin Joe, Lester and Arsby are in the men’s amen corner. It’s hot, we’re all fanning with those funeral home fans, swatting the occasional wasp or fly that has buzzed in thru the open windows. At this time, we don’t have a musician and every adult is tapping his/her foot on the wooden floors to lend sound to an old hymn like Blessed Assurance or At The Cross. The young ones like me, well our feet can’t reach the floor yet. Remember that anyone?

v My next memory is of the choir marching in from that tiny choir room in their white robes, pausing around the Altar as Rev. Malone said a prayer or some other tradition, before they marched in to the choir stands.  We kids only sang at Easter mostly as our parents gave us the evil eye to keep us straight.

v Remember those homecomings, when the different families would bring food from each home and serve from the trunks of their cars? Then we had the tiny kitchenette with 6 long tables for folks to eat around and visit.

v Next, with the encouragement of our homecomers, family and friends, some who live far off, others….close  (I’m talking about Cousin Creolia, The Johnsons, Cousin Virginia family members, Fedalma & Buck Malone ,…. we moved onto adding an awning , got some window units, new Altar (built by Uncle Kenchion Jones) and thought, wow have we come a long way!

v With God’s guidance and our obedience, we expanded with a vestibule, restrooms, larger fellowship hall and better parking.

v Of course, we are not forgetting what our four-fathers accomplished. We are thankful for the many sacrifices they endured that now propel us forward.

v My mom has mentioned several times, that there was a church back over near Cousin Alvin Johnson’s way but it wasn’t, at that time, named Brown Chapel. Only when the church was moved closer to where it is now, was it named Brown Chapel.  Wow, I thought, what a legacy our fore-fathers and mothers built!

v With all of these improvements, it reminds me that we, as Christians, are in the mode of improving ourselves as we journey thru our lives awaiting our eternal rewards.

v So, to close out this Welcome/Occasion….we here at Brown Chapel are so happy to see you and welcome you with open arms and love in our hearts.

Jeremiah 29:10-11 - This is what the Lord says: "When seventy years are completed for Babylon, I will come to you and fulfill my good promise to bring you back to this place.  For I know the plans I have for you." declared the Lord, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future."
Subject: I'm Thinking About You
  • Be careful who you listen to.
  • Finding hope in a lie rather than standing in the truth is what most would do.
  • Don't give up because of uncertainty.
  • God already knows everything about us.
Three points of interest
1. What you did in your past will cause you to deal with things in your present.
2. Just because your past looks bleak, God hasn't forgotten about you.
3. Because God was thinking about your past and present, He will prepare us for the future.
  • God has been thinking about us down through the years.
  • Remember, God has the last Word!!!

December 14, 2014 - Christmas Luncheon

Sunday School
1 Peter 3:1-22


  • Wives, be submissive to your husbands. This submission isn't a reward for the men. No, it is God's commandment as the proper order for the home.
  • As Jesus was submissive to His parents - Luke 2:51
  • As demons submitted to the disciples - Luke 10:17
  • As the church should submit to Jesus - Ephesians 5:24
  • As servants should submit to their masters - Titus 2:9 and 1 Peter 2:18
  • Husbands are to be understanding, giving honor to their wives. A godly husband strives to not merely share a house but truly live with his wife. He should truly love and cherish her as he does himself.
  • They are heirs together.
  • Godliness in suffering as Christ did.
  • Finally, be of one mind, having compassion for one another; love as brothers, be tenderhearted, be courteous; not returning evil for evil or reviling for reviling, but on the contrary blessing, knowing that you were called to this, that you may inherit a blessing.

Philippians 4:10-11 - v10 But I rejoice in the Lord greatly, that now at the last your care of me hath flourished again; wherein you were also careful, but you lacked opportunity. v11 Not that I speak in respect of want: for I have learned, in whatsoever state I am, therewith to be content.
Subject: "When You Can't Seem To Get "No" Satisfaction" 


  • Wickedness all around us from the government to the state-house!!
  • Competing  on television for stardom and money
  • Philippians 4:12 - I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want.
  • We cannot receive contentment from the world but from Christ Jesus.
  • Contentment comes from: Knowing that for God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life......John 3:16: God supplies all our needs according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus.....Philippians 4:19: And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to His purpose.......Romans 8:28
  • And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen His glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.....John 1:14

2 Timothy 3:1-17
"Difficult Times For Christian Service"
 
 
  • Identifying certain behaviors in the last days was key to Paul's instructions to Timothy.
  • Lovers of money; boastfulness and pride; disobedient to parents; ungratefulness; slanderers; blasphemers; high mindedness; recklessness; tricksters; love pleasure rather than God; acting as if religious but will reject the power that could make them godly.
  • Paul advised to stay away from people like these.
  • Timothy wanted to follow carefully Paul's doctrine and life so that he could teach others, knowing that he would be persecuted but holding fast to the Scriptures.
  • We, as Christians must expect persecution, remembering that if we endure hardship, we will reign with Him. (2 Timothy 2:12)
  • All scripture is given by inspiration of God.
  • This is God's way of preparing us in every way, fully equipped for every good thing God wants us to do.

Subject: The Joy Of Giving!
 
2 Corinthians 9:6-9 - v6 Remember this - a farmer who plants only a few seeds will get a small crop. But the one who plants generously will get a generous crop. v7 You must each make up your own mind as to how much you should give. Don't give reluctantly or in response to pressure. For God loves the person who gives cheerfully.  v8 And God will generously provide all you need. Then you will always have everything you need and plenty left over to share with others.  v9 As the Scriptures say, "Godly people give generously to the poor. Their good deeds will never be forgotten."
 
Ecclesiastes 3:1 - To every thing there is a season and a time to every purpose under the heaven.
We should always be in a season of giving, not just at Christmas.
The Lord loves a cheerful giver.
Acts 20:35 - It is more blessed to give than to receive.
2 Corinthians 9:6 - If we sow sparingly, we will reap sparingly.
Give as you've made up in your mind to give.
Philippians 4:11 -  Learn to be "content"
John 3:16 - For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

1 Timothy 4:1-16


  • Do not waste time arguing over godless ideas and old wives tales.
  • Spiritual exercise is more important than physical exercise.
  • Salvation is effective only for those who trust Him.
  • Christian life is filled with struggles and steady opposition but there is joy and peace for Christians, found within the believer's fellowship with Christ.
  • Throughout the time of the church the faithful can expect the defection and active opposition of some who have professed to be Christians (heresy).
  • The driving force behind this opposition to the church is, of course, Satan. The heretics are described as those who follow deceiving spirits and things taught by demons. (2 Corinthians 11:15 - It is no great thing therefore if his ministers also fashion themselves as ministers of righteousness, whose end shall be according to their works; 2 Corinthians 4:4 - in whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of the unbelieving, that the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God, should not dawn upon them; 2 Corinthians 11:3 - But I fear, lest by any means, as the serpent beguiled Eve in his craftiness, your minds should be corrupted from the simplicity and the purity that is toward Christ.)
  • Paul identified two aspects of false teachers: forbidding marriage and commanding abstinence for certain foods. It is possible that these notions came from the thought that the second coming had already occurred.
  • Teachers must be nourished by the Word of God; he must trained in godliness which is a life of faith strengthened by training in the Word of God; a mission/spiritual goal is to bring God's plan of salvation to all who would receive it. 
  • Romans 10:14-15 - How then shall they call on Him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in Him whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher?  and how shall they preach, except they be sent? even as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that bring glad tidings of good things!

Psalm 70:4 
Let all those that seek thee rejoice and be glad in thee; And let such as love thy salvation say continually, Let God be magnified.
Subject: Let God be Magnified


  • This was an urgent prayer by David when threatened by his enemies. David wanted the Lord to come quickly.
  • When we don't magnify the Lord, we are not in His will.
  • And if it seem evil unto you to serve Jehovah, choose you this day whom you will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were beyond the River or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you dwell; but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.  Joshua 24:15
  • Praise is important because it helps us remember who God is.
  • We serve an awesome God and praise enlarges and pleases Him.
  • Let God be magnified!
  • For as he thinks within himself, so is he: Eat and drink saith he to thee; But his heart is not with thee. Proverbs 23:7
  • Whatever you focus on gets bigger.


Three things to Magnify
1.  We can magnify through preaching the Word, for faith comes by hearing and hearing by the Word of God.
2.  We can magnify through praise.  Let them extol Him in the congregation of the people, and praise Him in the assembly of the elders. Psalm 107:32
3  We can magnify through our good works.

Everything that is good and perfect come from God!

Homecoming Service

Old Testament Psalm 100:1-5 - Make a joyful noise unto the Lord, all ye lands. Serve God with gladness; Come before His presence with singing. Know you that Jehovah, He is God: It is He that has made us,a dn we are His: We are His people, and the sheep of His pasture. Enter into His gates with thanksgiving, And into His courts with praise: Give thanks unto Him, and bless His name. For Jehovah is good; His loving kindness endures forever, and His faithfulness unto all generations. 
New Testament Philippians 4:8 - Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honorable, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.

Matthew 6:25 - Therefore I say unto you, be not anxious for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than the food, and the body than the raiment? 
The Book of Jonah
2 Chronicles 7:14 - if my people, who are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.
