Scripture: Matthew 26:38-44 Then he said to them, "My soul is deeply grieved, even to the point of death. Remain here and stay awake with me." Going a little father, he threw himself down with his face to the ground and prayed, "My Father, is possible, let this cup pass from me! Yet not what I will, but what you will." Then he came to the disciples and found them sleeping. He said to Peter, "So, couldn't you stay awake and pray that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak." He went away a second time and prayed, "My Father, if this cup cannot be taken away unless I drink it, your will must be done." He came again and found them sleeping; they could not keep their eyes open. So leaving them again, he went away and prayed for the third time, saying the same thing once more.
Subject: What Is In The Cup?!
- Three times Jesus asked for the cup to pass him and three times heaven was silent.
- Jesus concludes that God's will would be done.
- What is in the cup that caused Jesus to sweat drops of blood?
- First, the cup had the sin of the entire world.
- Everything that God created was good until Satan and sin came in. So, Jesus saw past, present and future sin in that cup.
- Second, the cup had suffering. Jesus saw that his hour was upon him. And he knew that he would face false charges, be spat on, beaten, etc.
- Third, the cup showed that Jesus was the living sacrifice.
- In the book of Leviticus, was the time of offering and sacrifice and atonement: these were times of animal sacrifices but in the case of Jesus in Matthew/Mark/Luke.....Jesus was the sacrifice, a living man.
- Jesus would be separated from his father. Matthew27:46 - At about the ninth hour Jesus cried with loud voice, saying, Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani? that is to say, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?
- And Fourth, in that cup Jesus sees our salvation which is himself.
