The Holy Spirit - Part 3
Question from 2nd Sunday...What does "give up the ghost" mean?
Give up the ghost – the
original Hebrew word was gaw-vah (ghost) meaning to breathe our, to exhale. Giving up the ghost means taking the dying
breath.
A few examples of this are Acts 5:5-10; Acts 12:23 & Luke 23:46 (King James version)
How
the Holy Spirit works in one’s life
It's impossible to follow God unless we
are led by the Spirit. And the only way to be led by the Spirit is to follow
God's command to be filled by the Spirit (Ephesians 5:18). Interestingly, God
contrasts being filled with the Spirit with being drunk. Somebody who is drunk
with wine or alcohol is controlled by and consumed by alcohol. But somebody who
is "drunk in the Spirit" is controlled and consumed by the Spirit,
who helps us live holy lives.
How are we filled with the Spirit? The Holy
Spirit entered you when you decided to give your life to Christ, to become a
Christian. But we need to continually ask the Holy Spirit to lead us, to guide
us, to help us do the things God wants us to do. When we're growing as
Christians, we should allow the Spirit to take control over more and more areas
of our lives.
The Holy Spirit plays many roles… from John
14:15-27 “I will not leave you as orphans,”
Jesus promises that the Spirit will bring us peace. Jesus also says that the Spirit will help us
recall the things we’ve learned about God.
In John 16, Jesus calls the Holy Spirit, a
“Counselor” who will guide us in or everyday lives. One way He does this is by
convicting us of sin. God wants us to get rid of the things that displease Him,
and the only way to identify those things is to be convicted by the Spirit. The
Spirit works through our conscience to make us aware of sin in our lives.
From Romans 8 – The Holy Spirit will help
us stop sinning and do the things that pleases God. Also, the Spirit helps us
pray. He helps s in times when we don’t know what to say in prayer and actually
intercedes for us.
Now, does the Spirit do everything for
us….NO! We are responsible for studying and praying and asking for guidance.
Question? How do we know when we are led by
the Holy Spirit and the evil spirit?
Galatians 5:22-23
- “the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness,
faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.”
If these things are evident in our lives, then we are on the correct
path. Since we live by the Holy Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit.
Seven Attributes of the Holy Spirit
- The Holy Spirit is a loving Comforter. When we face trials and tribulations, whose words are more important to comfort us: someone who doesn't know us or love us, or someone who knows every single thing about and loves us anyway?!
- The Holy Spirit is a faithful Comforter. People will fail us and hurt us but the Holy Spirit will never do that. He loves us even until the end.
- The Holy Spirit is an untiring Comforter. Sometimes when we try to comfort a person, we find it's beyond our capability and we grow tired and stop. And there are some people who cannot or will not be comforted. In fact, the more you attempt to comfort them, the worse they become. The Holy Spirit never loses heart or becomes weary.
- The Holy Spirit is a wise Comforter. We often listen to people for advice, who give the wrong advice as Job's friends did. A person's advice is like the wrong medicine, it could harm you and it doesn't cure what's ailing you. But the Holy Spirit is wise and is able to dissect, cut away and heal us, if we allow it.
- The Holy Spirit is a safe Comforter. Often family and friends give unsafe advice steeped in worldly knowledge. But the Holy Spirit is safe. You can rest and trust in Him. You can drink from His cup of consolation and drink fully in the knowledge that there are no bitter dregs in His cup.
- The Holy Spirit is an active Comforter. He intercedes for us. He will never leave us or forsake us but will actively lead and guide us in the perfect will of God.
- The Holy Spirit is an ever present Comforter. We don't have to send for Him. He's already right here with us. We can reach our to him no matter where we are.
Sermon
Philippians 4:6-9 - Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passes all understanding, shall keep your hears and minds through Christ Jesus. Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.
Subject: Attacking Anxiety
We need to have wisdom and self-control in life
Anxiety's cure is prayer
Take God at His Word!
In God's will we have peace of mind.
Cast all your cares on Him; for He cares for you. 1 Peter 5:7
Worry makes matters worse. There is no value in worrying.
Anxiety Is Focused On.....
- Worrying about things that may never happen
- Worrying about things in the past knowing you can't go back to change them
- Worrying about criticism from others
- Worrying about one's health
- Worrying about the problems of the day
Worry pulls tomorrow's clouds over today's sunshine!
Remember what God said in Jeremiah 29:11-13 - "For I know the plans I have for you." declares the Lord, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Then you will call on Me and come and pray to Me, and I will listen to you. You will seek Me and find Me when you seek Me with all your heart."
Jesus has conquered the world, so we really have nothing to worry or be anxious about.
